The Matt Pedersen Scholarship Fund
First Officer and UFV graduate Matt Pedersen’s life was tragically taken in an accident on Thursday July 9, 2009, while transporting donated blood for the Canadian Blood Services.
Matt dreamed of becoming a commercial pilot from an early age and at 15 he was already working towards his private license.
Matt’s strong work ethic was recognized in the aviation industry when he began his career on the ramp of the South Terminal at the age of 16. Working around planes was a labour of love to Matt – after all – how could there possibly be a better occupation for a future pilot.
In 2008, Matt achieved his dream, when he graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley with a commercial pilot’s license and degree.
Many of Matt’s close friendships were developed through the aviation community. The countless stories that have been shared about Matt have been a true reflection of his caring, kind and genuine nature. Matt’s sense of humour and his contagious smile seemed to be the common thread among the discussions and how much joy he brought to people with his positive and supportive personality.
Matt’s parents are very proud of what he accomplished in his short 23 years. They took comfort in knowing that their son had found a career that he truly loved and knew how much he enjoyed experiencing each sunrise and sunset while flying through the beautiful mountains and coastal regions of British Columbia.
It seems like such an understatement to say that Matt will live forever in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him, but it is also a fact, for it is all of us that know the true impact he had on so many lives. It is our hope and dream to continue Matt’s impact on others through the years to come.
In order to make this dream come true, a Memorial Fund has been established to support a yearly scholarship in Matt’s name. The scholarship will be presented to students who want to pursue careers in the aviation/business degree program.
Our goal is to raise a minimum of $12,500 to create an endowment that will fund this award in perpetuity. As flying was Matt’s passion, it seems only fitting that other students will be able to follow their dream through the living legacy of Matt Pedersen.
Please note that any donation to UFV is eligible for a tax receipt for the full gift amount.
Thank you for considering your contribution towards this lasting tribute to the memory and spirit of Matt Pedersen.
